SNORKELING TRIP TO THE GILIS

The three Gili islands are still excellent for snorkeling despite the devastation wreaked by the El Nino weather phenomenon in 1998. Some 90% of the hard corals around the islands down to 20 meters suffered badly at the time from bleaching and are still recovering. While you can snorkel directly from the beach, a good deal is to join the daily snorkeling tour at the very reasonable rate of Rp35,000 per person. As the boat has a glass bottom, those unable to snorkel, such as young kids, can also have the opportunity to see a wide array of beautiful multicolored tropical fish and, if lucky, even the odd turtle. A tip here: bring your own snorkeling gear as the quality of the stuff available for hire leaves much to be desired.

Nothing can be as relaxing as floating amidst a beautiful coral reef watching the undersea life, join our boat crew for a short ride to one at the nearby island reefs. Giant sea turtles and schools of Indo Pacific reef fish are abundant. After snorkeling our boat crew will land you on one of the Gili’s (Indonesian for Island). The Gili Islands are famous for their white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Here you can relax, swim along the fringing reef or take a ride around the island using one of the local pony and cart. Gili Island snorkeling trips disembark from our Jetty two times per day.

When you need a break from the snorkeling, the sugary white beaches are a perfect place for relaxation and sunbathing. The few hawkers that ply their trade here are much less aggressive than in Bali, and when they realize you don’t want what they are selling they quickly get the message. If the blazing tropical sun becomes too much to bear, shelter can be found under the palm trees that conveniently line the beaches.

If the weather is good – which it usually is – beautiful red sunsets can be seen, with the sun setting in the west over Mount Agung, Bali. Either head for Gili Trawangan’s northern coast else climb the island’s 100-meter hill (going up here is the only time you are likely to venture into the island’s interior during your stay).

As for Gili Air and Gilo Meno, they are even quieter than Gili Trawangan. Accommodations and restaurants are basic, but then that’s part of the charm. If you need more facilities, it’s more convenient to stay on Gili Trawangan and make day trips to these two islands.

Senggigi Beach Lombok
Sengigi is located on the western coast of Lombok with two stunning bays and the white sand beach. Senggigi Beach is only 15 minutes drive from Selaparang Airport, 45 minutes drive from Lembar Harbour and about 25 kilometers to Gili Island; the best dive site in Lombok.

Senggigi Beach Divided into three regions: northern Mangsit Beach, Central Senggigi and southern stretch near Batu Bolong. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling and other watersport activities completed with dramatic background. Senggigi beach is stretched out about 10 km of beachfront to the north of Mataram, Lombok’s capital.

Senggigi is the most developed area for tourists on Lombok. You can find a variety of restaurants, bars, discotheques, travel agents, photo processors, money changers, souvenir shop and a range of accommodations starting from budget guest house to 5 star hotels. Restaurants and small cafes line the colorful main beach road. Swimming off the beach is safe.

Gili Islands
Lombok’s most popular tourist destination, the Gili Islands started off as a backpacker mecca. This is still true but times are changing and there are now a rash of glamour options on the islands, especially Gili Trawangan. The islands are very relaxed and laid-back, with countless little beachside cafes still playing reggae and serving up banana pancakes, but also at the other end of the scale, elaborate seafood buffets, fresh salads and very good western and Asian food. Best of all, there are no cars or motorbikes to disturb the peace. The white sand beaches are without a doubt better than anywhere on Bali or Lombok. There are increasing numbers of westerners living on the Gilis and operating businesses from dive companies to resorts and there is a strong environmental focus here as the reefs have ben damaged in the past. While once people came to dive, snorkel and party, a more upmarket tourist is showing up now and while it is still all about the beach, there are many more options to wine and dine or hang out and meet new friends. From west to east, the islands are:

* Gili Trawangan (sometimes Trewangan) or just Gili T is the most developed with plenty of backpacker options, one swanky resort and increasing numbers of villas. There are no dogs on the island but according to one local, there are more cats here than people. The local population is around 800.

* Gili Meno, the smallest and quietest, low-key with some simple places to stay.

* Gili Air, closest to the mainland and with the largest local population.

Strictly speaking, the name “Gili Islands” is rather redundant as gili simply means “small island” in Sasak, but the name has stuck and is universally used and understood in Lombok.

There are also some other islands off Lombok called Gili Something, eg. Gili Nanggu and Gili Gede, but these are located to the southwest near Lembar, quite a distance from the “main” Gilis.
